As the fatal shooting incident of 17 year old Trayvon Martin continues to unfold in Sanford, Florida, Police Chief Bill Lee temporarily stepped down. This amid public criticism and an investigation by the FBI and Justice Department into the incident involving a neighborhood watch Captain George Zimmerman. The unarmed Martin was allegedly shot by Zimmerman. Authorities in Sanford have not charged Zimmerman with a crime, since under Florida law deadly force is allowed if it is reasonably believed that such force could avert serious harm, death or a “forcible felony”. Critics argue that since the teenager was unarmed, the use of force under that law is not reasonable. Zimmerman has received death threats and friends and family have given interviews defending him. The Justice Department started an investigation to conclude if it was a racially motivated incident. One news radio report has described that Trayvon was on his cell phone talking to someone as he was being chased by Zimmerman. Others report that the 911 tapes recorded a possible racial slur by Zimmerman.

A mother accused of murder and attempted murder will face additional charges in a shooting incident that occurred on Mother’s Day in Tustin Ranch. Annamaria Gana reportedly fired a gun toward her bedroom ceiling. Her husband and teenage son then entered the room. Gana subsequently fired at her husband hitting him in the chest. She then shot her teenage son in the arm as he was running away. He ran outside and managed to call police. Her youngest son, who is 9 years old manage to wrestle the gun away from his mother. The father of the two boys was found dead inside the home. Gana is facing an additional attempted murder charge and special circumstances murder allegedly because she was lying in wait for her husband. Enhancements were also added, one for personal discharge of a firearm causing death and shooting a gun causing great bodily injury. She could be facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. It is possible that the woman suffered from mental health issues and had recently had her medication changes.

Los Angeles detectives are investigating another shooting at a marijuana dispensary. In Northridge this past weekend $11,000.00 was stolen from a dispensary, and an employee was shot in the face. He was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition according to a Los Angeles Times’ article. Days before on Thursday, June 24 two stores in L.A. were held up. In Echo Park two employees were shot, one of them died. Another pot dispensary in Hollywood was also robbed; multiple robbers entered and killed one person during the incident. This activity has concerned officials but they have not established a connection between the three robberies.
