The Los Angeles Police Department’s robbery and homicide division are investigating three stabbing incidents. One incident occurred in Santa Monica the other two in Los Angeles. Three homeless people were stabbed by one suspect. According to the Los Angeles Times, police said they were searching for David Ben Keyes who has been missing from Santa Barbara. Now police state that the suspect’s real name is Courtney Anthony Robinson. The three victims survived the attacks. Two weapons have been recovered each from a different crime scene. One a black kitchen knife used in the Hollywood incident where a homeless woman was stabbed while she slept. The other was a hunting knife from the first attack on July 4th, the victim had been struck between the shoulder blades. The knife was still inserted in his back when he was helped. Notes have been left at all three sites. A note with the words “death warrants” and the suspect’s signature have been confirmed at two of the crime scenes.

On September 13, 2009 officials arrested Brian H. Benedict at his on-campus graduate student housing complex; he was a graduate student in physics at UC Irvine. The police arrived after witnesses claimed to have heard two gun shots. After hearing Benedict’s preliminary hearing, a Harbor Court judge has found sufficient evidence against Benedict for murdering his ex-wife Rebecca Clarke. Based on Irvine Police Department’s account of the incident Benedict hit Hughes with a hammer, she ran out of the house and Benedict chased after her. Hughes ran through a parking lot as her ex-husband fired at her twice, only one bullet wounded her. Hughes had arrived at Benedict’s home to pick up their four year old son. Benedict was paying child support in an amount which he claims he could not afford. He will be arraigned on October 12, 2010.

Clarence E. Butterfield was convicted for the murder of his 21 year old daughter after her body was found in his motor home. The vehicle had been impounded due to Butterfield’s arrest in another matter and authorities found the body in the freezer of the motor home. The body had been in the freezer for two years with signs of multiple bullet entries, no clothes and hog-tied. Butterfield testified that he had found his daughter’s body as described in the bathroom area. He explained to the court that he believed there was a possibility his daughter could resurrect so he kept the body. According to the Orange County Register during his cross-examination he asked the D.A. questions, rambled on at times and was being belligerent with the District Attorney to the point where a recess was called to cool things off.

Alex Trujillo had a 0.11 blood alcohol level and was also under the influence of prescription drugs when his vehicle swerved on to the sidewalk striking a woman who was riding her bike and killing her. The incident occurred in 2008 in the City of Seal Beach located in Orange County. Mr. Trujillo will be charged with murder for this incident and face 15 years to life because he had been previously convicted of a DUI in 2002. A recent change in the law resulting from the case People v. Watson, allows Defendants to be charged with 2nd degree murder if they had a previous Drunk Driving conviction and should therefore know of the risks of driving drunk. Mr. Trujillo’s trial begins Wednesday.
Armando Escobar served as a sergeant in the U.S. army and spent a 9-month tour of duty in Iraq without ever experiencing a gun shot wound. But all that changed on May 11, 2007 in Orange County when Escobar was shot in the face while playing volleyball with his sister in his own front yard. He was rushed to UCI Medical Center, where he was sutured internally and externally to close up his wounds. Two members of the Darkside street gang—Arroyo and Torres, were later arrested in connection with the shooting. Both men had driven into Escobar’s neighborhood around 6 p.m. on the date of incident seeking to retaliate against rivals from the 18th Street gang for an incident earlier in the day. However, Arroyo’s aim was not accurate and he hit Escobar instead.

Arroyo was later found guilty of two counts of attempted murder, street terrorism, and a weapons charge, which could result in a 50-year prison sentence. Torres was also initially charged with attempted murder, however, charges were dismissed after authorities learned he had been shot and paralyzed in a previous gang shooting in which he was sentenced to prison for more than a decade for his involvement. See Penal Code Sections 186.22; 664-187; 245(a) (1).
